Facebook users uploaded more than 2.7 million photographs, shared 1 million links and “liked” 7.6 million pages every 20 minutes in 2010, according to the company.
Among other data the social network is releasing: Lady Gaga was the most-liked celebrity on Facebook () with 24.7 million likes, beating out Eminem with 23.7 million and Barack Obama, who had 17.2 million.
The numbers also offer a snapshot into Facebook users’ love lives in 2010. Some 43,869,800 people changed their relationship status to single during the year while 3,025,791 changed it to “it’s complicated.” Another 28,460,516 changed their status to in a relationship, 5,974,574 to engaged and 36,774,801 to married.
Meanwhile, here’s a look at Facebook activity from a randomly chosen 20 minutes:

The numbers are so big I could not help myself to get a look at them “by the billion“, translating these 20 minute data into a year and also to look at the members average use throughout the year and per day. I do not have the average number of Facebook users for 2010, but in a quick and dirty way using the 500 million member stats, the average user of Facebook did the following in 2010:

I was shocked by the small amount of links shared, but the numbers for pictures, messages, comments and likes are impressive.
Since Facebook is where Americans spend more time than anywhere else on the Internet, our needs as social media marketers as well as professionals to stay on top of the latest trends in 2010 regarding the social media gorilla are as important as ever. While I limited my similar top blog posts on Twitter and LinkedIn to 20, so many people had so much resourceful information to provide on FB that I felt the need to expand this blog post to include the top 30 most useful articles this year. Because Facebook gives anyone the ability to create a mini-web site on their platform as a Page, I included many blog posts that talk about everything from how to create one, customize it, and then use it as your base for social media engagement.
You may wonder why I go through the trouble of compiling and writing these posts, but the answer is simple: Our industry is changing so fast and there are so many blog posts and tweets out there that I want to make sure to provide a guideline to my readers, and myself, of those must-read articles that will help everybody keep pace or get up-to-speed in learning about the latest thinking surrounding any given social media platform. The end-of-the-year is the perfect time to do this.

Facebook is a government. Facebook’s users are citizens, and Facebook’s applications developers are the private companies that drive much of the economy. Apple. Twitter, Myspace, Craigslist, Foursquare, Tumblr and every other large network of engaged users (including some services of Google) plays a similar role. We have always tacitly acknowledged this. We talk about these networks as communities, communities have governments.
Very interesting read. Whith those same companies owning and storing all their user-citizens information and not disclosing much about their own, where are transparency and the necessary checks and balances? As users-citizens, do we have any rights at all that can be duly protected? Real governments do play an important role here and so may international bodies like the EU, for the best of for the worst.
